She FaceTimed her mother after the brutal attack, and her first words were, “Mom, this is serious, I’ve been stabbed!” Kyli Watts, 24, was walking in North Hollywood around 11:30 a.m. m. Oct. 10 when Jonathan Cole, 30, allegedly stabbed the 4-inch blade tool into the back of his head for no apparent reason, police said.
With the scissors still embedded in his skull, Watts ran to a nearby restaurant, where he called 911 and FaceTimed her mother, Amy Watts, a psychiatric nurse in North Carolina. Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center had to leave a bone fragment in place after shears shattered her skull because it was too close to a major blood vessel, meaning removing it would have been too dangerous, Amy told the station. Still, despite the horrific attack, her mother said she and her daughter harbor no anger toward the homeless assailant.
“If this was a person with epilepsy who hadn’t taken her medication and had a seizure while driving and hit her son crossing the street, would he really be angry or did he understand that this is a person with a disease? Amy said. “That’s what we’re dealing with here,” added the foster parent whose family has experience with the severely mentally ill.
“Becoming numb and callous is not the right answer. These things are happening due to a systemic failure in treating mental illness,” added the psychiatric nurse. Kyli was recently laid off from her job in tech recruiting, so she moved to Los Angeles a few weeks ago. She currently does not have health insurance, according to a GoFundMe created in her name.
