A man convicted of rape and murder in a University of Alaska Fairbanks dorm that went unsolved for more than two decades has been sentenced to 75 years in prison in Alaska. Steven Downs, of Auburn, Maine, declined to address the courtroom before the newly handed down sentence Monday. arrested in 2019 in Maine. Downs was a freshman at UAF in 1993 and lived in the dorm where Sergie was found dead.
The defense argued that any sentence of more than 20 years would be life in prison due to Downs’s health. He exceeds 400 pounds and has high blood pressure, his attorney said.

Prosecutors said Downs showed no remorse. Sergie was sexually assaulted, shot in the head and stabbed multiple times, authorities said. Sergie was a former UAF student but she was not enrolled when she went to live with a friend who lived in the residence. She was last seen when she went to smoke a cigarette and her friend suggested that she smoke near the exhaust vents in the women’s restroom to avoid the cold outside, according to court documents.
Janitors found Sergie’s body in a bathtub in the shower room on the afternoon of April 26, 1993. Downs did not testify at his trial and was sentenced in February. After Downs was found guilty, Sergie’s brother Alexie told KTUU-TV that the case had affected the family over the years. His mother died in 2021, after Downs was arrested but before trial.
“On special occasions, he would burst into tears for a while,” said Alexie Sergie. “And she’d start a prayer and start praying… I said to myself, you know, one of these days they’re going to find the guy, they’re going to find him. No one can hide for that long.
