A Citrus County woman was arrested after deputies found a child and several animals living in deplorable and filthy conditions at her Beverly Hills home, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies said they responded to the Citrus County home of Shannon Marie Morgan, 38, on Wednesday about an animal cruelty complaint.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were immediately overwhelmed by the acrid smell of ammonia inside the home. They found several glass cages and aquariums containing snakes and rodents, as well as rats and cats running around the house, investigators said. The animals were deprived of all their basic needs, CCSO said.

The buildup of fecal matter and urine in the house and cages also led to an infestation of flies, cockroaches and other insects, according to agents. Trash, dirty dishes and rotting food were scattered throughout the home, bringing more roaches and flies, the sheriff’s office said.
In one of the bedrooms, officers said they found two more cages, containing a ferret and a dog. The ferret’s cage was full of urine and feces, and the dog’s cage was too small, according to the CCSO researchers. Deputies said both animals were being deprived of food and water.
Inside a second bedroom in the home, the sheriff’s office said they found a juvenile surrounded by trash piled all over the floor. The bugs were also all over the floor and the mattress was covered in roaches, according to the agents.
Investigators said there was also blood on the floor from one of the cats that was eaten by a rat. CCSO said around 50 rodents were found in a third bedroom in cages, as well as more than 300 other rodents roaming freely.
