Sean Kuilan Wiki – Sean Kuilan Biography

A man accused of breaking glass windows at a Hell’s Kitchen LGBTQ bar may have been “getting back” at an employee who had a problem with a woman he knew, police said Tuesday. Sean Kuilan, 34, was taken into custody by an NYPD warrant team early Tuesday morning.

He was questioned a day after police released surveillance footage of a man throwing a brick at VERS on Ninth Ave. near W. 49th St. in Hell’s Kitchen. I’m still very curious about his motivations,” said David DeParolesa, who co-owns the bar. “I just want to make sure that it really is the end for him.”

Incident Detail

A tip from CrimeStoppers and area residents who recognized Kuilan from surveillance video led to the suspect being charged, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said. Police caught up with Kuilan at the apartment he shares with his father, down the block from the bar.

He was charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, police said. Kuilan told police he broke the windows because he “knows a girl who had a problem with one of the employees at the bar, and she was getting back at it,” Essig said.

The co-owner of the bar was not aware of such a dispute. “There were no further details about it. I don’t even understand that,” said DeParolesa, 40. “We have not kicked anyone out.

“I think we probably asked a few people who are too drunk, like normal things, but there hasn’t been anyone who has caused any problems that we’ve been concerned about,” he added.

Essig said police corroborated Kuilan’s account. “We have corroborated much of his story,” Essig said. “There’s no reason why he targeted the place because it was a gay bar.” The bespectacled suspect committed three attacks on the bar in one week.

There may have been a fourth incident, but there is no video evidence of this, Essig said. No one was injured in the attacks, but the bar had to spend $600 to replace the window after each incident, VERS co-owner Aidan Davis told the Daily News on Monday.

“We updated our camera system, and this most recent attack is when we were able to get a clear image of the attacker, who was wearing glasses,” Davis said. Despite the repeated attacks, VERS will remain open, Davis said. “After Pulse and what happened recently, we just want people to know that our community is not afraid,” he continued, referring to Saturday’s deadly shooting at a Colorado LGBTQ club that took five lives.

In his latest attack, the Hell’s Kitchen vandal was caught on camera throwing a brick at VERS’ window around 10 p.m. Saturday. On November 13, the police came to the bar around 5:35 p.m. m. after he threw a brick at the window. The policemen returned to the establishment two days later to receive a similar call around 6:40 p.m. m., police said.

“We had a repairman come in and reinstall the window, and less than 90 minutes after he finished installing the third window, it happened again,” Davis said. “So we fear the individual was watching.” Kuilan has a previous arrest in the city for threats in September 2021, police said.

Since he never appeared in court, a warrant was issued for his arrest. “I wish people were good neighbors,” Davis implored. “If you see something, say something, because these acts of violence are not normal. The queer community is strong and we have worked very hard to get to where we are and we are not going anywhere.”
