In Colorado, an 81-year-old man was detained over the weekend for reportedly using an axe to kill and dismember his wife and daughter. He told police that he did not feel guilty about the horrific killings because he thought his family was “in a better place.” According to reports, Reginald MacLaren was arrested on Saturday night and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the passing of Bethany MacLaren, 70, and Ruth Jennifer MacLaren, 35.
According to a press release from the Englewood Police Department, officers were called to a home in the 900 block of Englewood Pkwy on March 25 at about 6:03 p.m. after receiving a report that a man, later identified as MacLaren, had just killed his wife and daughter.

The two women were killed with a hammer, according to MacLaren, who allegedly told the emergency operator that he thought he knew the offender. When first responders arrived on the site, they went inside the house and found “two victims within large trashcans that were on the floor of the living room/kitchen area.”
They both seemed to have “severe injuries” and “no signs of life,” respectively. At the scene, they were declared dead. The crime scene was the scene of a combined investigation by EPD homicide detectives, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit, and the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities said that after conducting that investigation, they found that “one victim was dismembered using a saw” and that both of the ladies were slain with an axe. According to a sworn document, police said they discovered a Stanley brand hand saw close to the trash cans and “saw considerable amounts of blood throughout the unit.”
Detectives said MacLaren confessed to the killings about three hours after the 911 call, stating he had recently lost his job, had no money left, and had to kill his family to keep them from becoming homeless. According to the complaint, MacLaren started making plans to kill his family around ten days ago so they wouldn’t be homeless.
He purchased a hand saw, two trash cans in the “Totter” style, and an axe from Home Depot. He had every intention of using these tools to commit the murders. Also allegedly providing information on the killings was MacLaren. His wife and kid were on the couch this morning (March 25) at around 11 a.m. The affidavit claims that he used the axe to hit his wife in the head, instantly rendering her unconscious.
“He then used the axe to strike his daughter in the head, rendering her unconscious. He gave each victim two additional axe blows to the head. He was conscious of killing them. MacLaren further explained to detectives that he “used the saw had purchased to cut the victims’ arms and legs off” before placing the victims’ remains in the cans because he knew the bodies of his wife and daughter would not fit into the recently acquired trash cans.
He said to the police that he was unable to move the dead because he lacked the strength to lift the cans. According to the police affidavit, “[MacLaren] does not regret killing his family because he “knows” they are in a better place.” On first-degree murder accusations, he was detained and taken to the Arapahoe County Prison.One of the most grisly crime scenes that some detectives who had been on the job for more than 20 years had ever been a part of, according to Englewood Police Division Chief Tracy Jones, was inside MacLaren’s home.
