UrbanUrban was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound a short time later, authorities said. A preliminary investigation indicated that “Urban made an appointment with an acquaintance on the reservation and was shot at some point during the meeting,” Onofri and Rosso said.

Post University President and CEO John L. Hopkins said the Waterbury college community was mourning Urban’s death. Urban was a first-year business administration student. “Philip modeled the attributes of leadership, commitment and hard work on the field and in the classroom,” Hopkins said in a statement.

“We hope that his family, his friends and those affected by his passing find strength during this extremely difficult time. ” Post offers counseling for its school community, said Joan Huwiler, a spokeswoman for the university. Phil loved the game of basketball,” Post men’s basketball head coach Marc Kuntz said in a phone interview Monday. “He spent a lot of time in the gym. He loved our show, he loved the guys. He loved hanging out with them.”

And while Urban was quiet, he was known for his sense of humor in the locker room, Kuntz said. “Phil was well-liked by everyone in the Post community,” the coach said in a statement posted on the school’s athletics page. “His easy-going sense of humor was contagious and he was a valuable part of our basketball program.”

Kuntz said he has no idea why anyone would want to hurt him. “He was a good kid,” said the coach. “He had no problems at the Post. I can’t speak to the situation other than to say it’s tragic.” He leaves behind a younger sister, Kuntz said.

Urban is averaging 2.5 points in four games this season for the Division II Post, who was in Florida over the weekend for two games. Urban didn’t have a lot of time to play his freshman year, Kuntz said, and the school was limiting his travel list, so he was asked to stay home and start vacation early.

Post defeated 16th-ranked Florida Southern College, 87-83, on Saturday in Lakeland, Florida. Kuntz called the win “a great win” in a tweet later Saturday night. The team was scheduled to play Barry University in Lakeland on Sunday, but the game was cancelled. The next post is scheduled to play at home on December 29 against the University of Asunción.

Urban, a 6-foot-6 forward, graduated from Pennington School, just a few miles from where he was found dead, outside of Trenton, New Jersey. In a statement, Lori Lipsky, Pennington’s director of communications and marketing, said the school community was “shocked” to learn of Urban’s death.

“Philip spent his middle and high school years at Pennington and was a valued member of the school community,” Lipsky said. Lipsky declined to comment further on Urban’s death, but said counseling would be available to students this week despite Pennington School being closed for winter break.

While in high school, Urban also played for the club’s basketball team, the New Jersey Panthers. In a statement, the Panthers called Urban “lovable, respectful and loyal.” “As the Panther family is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own, we must recognize how much happiness Phil has brought to this organization and those around it,” the Panthers said in a statement. ”

He had a great sense of humor and he was one of the most beloved student-athletes in our organization by both players and staff.” The Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Hopewell Township Police Department are jointly investigating the shooting.
