The U.S. Naval Academy is grappling with yet another somber loss as Midshipman 1st Class Mason Halsey, a 22-year-old political science major from Gulfport, Mississippi, passed away on New Year’s Day while on holiday leave. The circumstances surrounding his untimely death are currently under investigation, leaving the Naval Academy community in shock and mourning.
A Dedicated and Passionate Midshipman:
Mason Halsey, a member of the 5th Co., was not only a committed political science major but also an integral part of the coed cheer team since his plebe year. Known for his passion and dedication, Mason left a lasting impact on his teammates and coaches alike. Kimberly Salyers, the spirit team coach, fondly recalls Mason’s eagerness to help train new members and his constant dedication to improving his team’s skills.
“He had cheer experience prior to attending the Naval Academy and was very passionate about training and helping others achieve their goals,” Salyers said. “Even when the cheer season was over, he would constantly text me to see if he could hold stunt sessions. He was always available during plebe summer to assist me with the incoming plebes and even received his cheer certification to be able to be a safety observer.”
Mason Halsey From Mississippi Died At 22:
Rear Adm. Fred Kacher, the academy’s acting superintendent, expressed the collective grief felt by the Naval Academy community, stating, “The whole Naval Academy family — the Brigade of Midshipmen, the faculty, staff, and coaches — mourn the tragic and unexpected loss of Midshipman Mason Halsey.” He extended heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the Halsey family, friends, and Mason’s extended Naval Academy family.
U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Maryland, also conveyed his condolences, stating, “It is heartbreaking to learn of the tragic passing of Midshipman First Class Mason Halsey. Mason was a member of the United States Naval Academy cheer team and a political science major who was passionate about helping others reach their goals. May his memory be a blessing.”
A Series of Losses:
Mason Halsey’s death marks the third loss of a midshipman in recent years. In 2022, Midshipman 2nd Class Luke Gabriel Bird passed away while studying abroad in Chile. Bird, 21, was found dead in a lagoon on July 17, 2022, after a hiking accident. The following year, Enrique “Ricky” Castellon-Davis, a 23-year-old graduate from the Class of 2022, died unexpectedly in a subway accident.
