Megan Thornton, had only been at the beachfront property for a short time when she was told she couldn’t stay the night because 15 family members were already sleeping in the cabin. Megan was fine with that and she walked to the back garden which was only 30ft from the edge of the cliff overlooking Widemouth Bay, Cornwall.
An investigation heard that the solar lights indicated the edge of the cliff, but the lights were not on that night in the pitch black of the night. There were no fences to protect people from the high cliff edge because coastal erosion brings down the fences.

Tragically, Megan, who was trying to walk home, took a few steps and plunged to her death off the cliff. The talented 23-year-old had graduated with a degree from Cardiff University and then a master’s degree in marketing from the University of Exeter.
She achieved such a high level of academic success that the University of Exeter Business School awarded her a world-class scholarship, overnight in Bude, Cornwall, with friends. Megan ran into a group of strangers who were staying at the old cabin.
She joined Charlie Pengilly, whom she met that night and who was staying at the cabin with members of her family, and they took a cab to the property. But she couldn’t stay because there were already 15 people sleeping there and they left through the back door. .
Charlie said that he tried to call a taxi, but it seems that Megan had intended to walk back to where she was staying. But in the total darkness of a property she didn’t know, she took two steps and plunged down the cliff and landed on the rocks of the beach.
Charlie raised the alarm and house guest Alice Rogers, who is a GP nurse, rushed to the beach at 2am and gave an unconscious Megan life support until paramedics arrived before she sadly died. Charlie said, “She was a lovely girl. She was just trying to get him a cab home.”
Her father, Paul Thornton, said: “She was very precious to us. We are very proud of her.” She accomplished a lot in her short life. She was so single-minded, very determined, hard-working and very ambitious.” She said the family did not blame anyone for the tragedy and she was grateful to Ms. Rogers for going out of her way to help her at the beach.
An autopsy concluded that she died of head and neck injuries consistent with a fall from a height. She was 1.5 times over the drink driving limit, but she was a “fit and well” young woman. Cornwall’s senior coroner, Andrew Cox, said Megan had intended to walk back to her address at 2 a.m.
