A woman who stabbed her children on a highway has been charged with two counts of attempted murder as authorities praised a man who was involved in the incident, which could prevent a much worse situation.
Megan Jayne Somerville allegedly stopped her car on the North-South Expressway Monday night, August 15, and removed her two young children from the vehicle before stabbing them multiple times with a knife. Police said a member of the public who witnessed the incident stopped her car on the highway and intervened, disarming the suspect. The two children were rushed to Women and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide and treated for life-threatening injuries.

Fortunately, Megan’s eight-year-old son underwent surgery for his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday, August 16, and is expected to make a full recovery. Her three-year-old brother was also expected to undergo surgery, although his condition was described as stable. Meanwhile, her 35-year-old mother was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she underwent a medical evaluation. Court records revealed that she was taken into custody to appear in court again in December, although her attorneys were allowed to call an earlier bond hearing.
Following the incident, Superintendent Selena Dinning said how grateful police were to the man, who was not identified, and others who helped with the situation. “If this man hadn’t stopped, I’m sure the situation would have been much worse,” Dinning said. “We are very grateful that he stopped and we are also very grateful to the other two members of the public who helped him.
We think he was very brave to do this. We are very happy that he was there, at the right place, at the right time.” The superintendent said it was not clear what caused the incident or where the woman was headed. “He was on the highway, so he’s not that far (from her house), but I can’t say why he was there,” Dinning added. Some reports suggested that Megan told her children “Mom loves you” as she was led away from the scene.
Megan’s sister, Jessica Somerville, took to social media on Tuesday to reveal that the suspect had been in contact with South Australian Police and the Department of Child Protection. “Despite repeated interactions with SAPOL and the Department of Child Protection, the system has not adequately intervened,” Jessica alleged. “Megan has had serious mental illness and drug addiction problems for the past eight years and despite the efforts of her family and friends, she has continued to deteriorate with a series of incidents over the years.” she added.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas described reports of the incident as “clearly shocking”. He said: “There are so many unanswered questions here. It is appropriate that the police investigation continues,” adding, “It is impossible to understand. If the allegations are proven true, God knows under what circumstances.” have led to this absolute tragedy.
