Indictments against a 41-year-old Bronx, New York, woman are pending in connection with the drowning death of her young daughter, which occurred more than a year after the mother had left the 7-year-old unattended near a hotel pool on Long Island, according to the prosecution.

Prosecutors reported that Katlyn “became septic and passed away” on May 1, 2023. Authorities claimed that Baez was a guest at the hotel along with her boyfriend, daughter Katlyn, and son M.S., who was five months old. Baez allegedly left Katlyn alone behind the pool’s gates in the afternoon while her partner was still at work and went to have some food and drinks at the hotel bar instead of watching either of her kids.
The prosecution alleged that despite hotel officials having told Baez not to leave her daughter beside the pool without a lifeguard, the defendant nonetheless did so. They also claimed that the mother had eaten in the hotel bar and left her 5-month-old boy alone in a hotel room while she drank at least two alcoholic beverages.
Baez allegedly asked hotel workers at the front desk to unlock the pool gate for the internal atrium pool at around 3:30 p.m. Baez was informed by hotel employees that since there was no lifeguard on duty, she had to be there with her daughter at all times. However, Baez is said to have left Katlyn alone to play in the pool while she ate and drank at the hotel bar, according to a news release from the prosecution. ”
About 30 minutes later, Baez went back to the pool to check on Katlyn, who was still left alone in the water, and reportedly abandoned her again. Baez then returned to the hotel bar for a second alcoholic cocktail after going upstairs to her room, where her 5-month-old kid was left alone. For more than 30 minutes, the defendant allegedly did not come back to see how Katlyn was doing.
Additionally, the prosecution alleged that Baez was more worried about breaking her phone and keeping her shoes and socks dry than she was about jumping into the pool to save her daughter. According to the press statement, “When Baez returned and saw that her child was floating lifeless in the pool, she removed her shoes and socks and put her phone aside before removing her daughter from the pool.”
Baez is accused of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child in the indictment. Baez is charged with “knowingly act[ing] in a manner likely to be injurious to the physical, mental, or moral welfare” of both her daughters, two misdemeanour offences, and “recklessly causing Katlyn’s death,” a felony punishable by up to 15 years.
According to the prosecution, the suspect was arraigned before acting New York Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski on Tuesday and was ordered jailed without bail. Slamming Baez, Suffolk County DA Raymond Tierney stated in a statement that “the alleged actions of this defendant were selfish, senseless, and heartless.” “We are going to do everything we can to make sure that little Katlyn, whose brief life ended too soon, is given justice.” The defendant will next appear in court on May 24, as of right now.
