A man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for shooting a 16-year-old boy on his bike after mistakenly thinking the boy was connected to someone he was targeting for murder. Luis Garcia was sentenced last week for the 2021 shooting of Jonathan Camacho, authorities said in a news release Sunday. Garcia was convicted last week of first-degree murder, possession of a criminal instrument and violations involving illegal firearms, prosecutors said in a statement.
On Jan. 4, 2021, Garcia shot Camacho eight times after the teen passed him on his bike. Garcia fled in a Subaru Legacy driven by another man. Officers arrived and tried to save the boy’s life, but he died. Camacho’s parents said the loss opened a void in the family that will never be filled again. “I wish I could have been there to hold Jonathan so he wasn’t alone while he took his last breath,” his family wrote in a statement read to the court.
