According to recent court filings, Heuremann was tracked by authorities using a burner phone that he allegedly used to contact the claimed victims. An purported piece of his hair that was discovered at the bottom of the hessian bag that had been used to wrap Waterman’s body was another crucial piece of evidence connecting him to the murders.
According to earlier reports, Mallia was looking for the body of Shannan Gilbert, 23, when he came upon the remains of more victims and reopened the inquiry. Gilbert, a New Jersey-based escort who had gone missing in May 2010, was also discovered deceased on Gilgo Beach. After finishing a date with a client named John Brewer in Oak Beach on Long Island at 4.51 am on May 1, 2010, authorities noted that Gilbert made a 22-minute-long 911 call.
Two even shorter calls for assistance to the dispatcher were made after the lengthy, agitated call. According to NBC News, Brewer confirmed meeting Gilbert that evening, but authorities said he was unrelated to her passing. Despite conducting numerous autopsies and asserting that Gilbert may have been strangled, investigators for many years held that she was not a victim of a crime.
Most recently, Suffolk County officials stated that Gilbert was the victim of a “tragic accident” and might have been under the influence of drugs or died from exposure after reaching the shore and becoming lost. Gillbert’s mother Mari, however, refused to accept these defences and proceeded in her pursuit of justice for her daughter. Even the 2020 Netflix film “Lost Girls” was inspired by Mari’s struggles to maintain the inquiry. She passed away in 2016 before the case of her daughter’s disappearance was cracked.
