The Associated Press reported that court records establish that officers located the boy lying on the bed in the master bedroom with multiple stab wounds and a knife protruding from his chest. According to Law & Crime, Jennifer’s father Charles Long, who was stabbed by her, received initial treatment at the scene before being airlifted to Huntsville Hospital.
According to property records in Morgan County, Charles Long, 69, owns the home where the crime took place, located at 94 Colony Drive. Jennifer Nicole Long is charged with the capital murder of her 8-year-old son. Under Alabama law, statute 13A-5-40(a)(15) makes the intentional killing of a child under the age of 14 a possible capital offense.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office also said additional charges are pending, primarily for allegedly stabbing her father. Yahoo News reported that in August 2021, Jennifer was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, which Hartselle police officers said they located during a domestic disturbance call. Again in March 2022, the Sheriff’s Office charged Jennifer with public intoxication.
Yahoo News also reported that an affidavit from Rep. Celeste Sharbutt mentions that the rep asked Jennifer Nicole Long if she was taking any drugs, to which she replied that the last time she took methamphetamine was two days ago and she has been awake for two or three days. Law & Crime, Tyler Weston Gardiner, the 8-year-old son of Jennifer Nicole Long, attended Priceville Elementary School and was in the third grade.
In a statement, Morgan County Schools Superintendent Tracie Turrentine conveyed her condolences and thoughts to the student’s family. She also mentioned that in this difficult time, with the school community dealing with the tragedy, support services are being offered to all those in need.
According to a WAAY-TV report, Morgan County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Mike Swafford announced that the department will be providing advice to officers and staff investigating this case. Priceville Elementary School Principal Daniel Gullion said a crisis team would be at the school March 17 and 20 to help grieving students.
