Police said the ax was used to hit the victim on her neck and was left in the house after the murder. Researchers collected a DNA sample from the ax during the initial investigation, but then-fairly nascent technology at the time prevented a match to that sample.
The case was recently reopened, police said, and that DNA sample was sent to Parabon NanoLabs, a Virginia-based company that is nationally recognized for helping law enforcement solve cold cases through evidence. advanced forensics and mapping techniques.
According to police, the company identified three possible suspects earlier this year. Eventually, through a search warrant, police obtained a DNA sample from Premo, who lives and works in Renton, Washington, near Puget Sound. That DNA obtained with the warrant, MPD said, was sent to the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab and compared to DNA found on the hatchet, said MPD Detective Wade Rediger, the current lead investigator on the case.
The defendant was allegedly identified as a person of interest from the beginning of the investigation, police said. Premo allegedly denied knowing the victim at all, but authorities said he later found out that he had written a letter to Brinkman just before she died.
In addition, Rediger said, police found evidence that the defendant had “attempted to meet with” the victim “around the time of his death.” Police shared additional details about the relationship between the alleged killer and the victim in the cold case.
“Jennifer was a social person,” said MPD Detective Sgt. James Maples. “She encouraged conversation while she went to the library, she walked through the city. She participated in phone chat lines, dating sites, and actively sought people’s company.”
Police believe Brinkman met her killer through one of those chat lines. During a question-and-answer session with local media, police identified the chat line as “Nightline,” a system by which anonymous people call and connect with other anonymous people of the opposite sex.
The girl’s father died in 2013, but police said news of the arrest was shared with Brinkman’s mother. “She was extremely excited,” Lamoureux said. “She cried and she was so thankful for the work we put into it. I think it was an overwhelming emotion for her to finally have an answer.” Premo is currently being held in the Snohomish County Jail.
“Solving this case has been at the top of the Marysville Police Department’s priority list for the past 24 years,” said MPD Chief Erik Scairpon. “We never gave up, nor did we put this on a shelf. He was continually investigating himself, in the belief that one day we could achieve some level of closure for the family and justice for Jennifer.”
