A Jackson man has been charged with the murder of a 23-year-old woman who was shot last week, authorities said. The New Hampshire attorney general’s office said Brandon Mitchell was arrested and charged with second-degree murder for causing the death of 23-year-old Esmae Doucette of Jackson. Investigators said they were called to the Dana Place Apartments on Route 16 in Jackson on Wednesday just before 7:30 p.m. m. for reports of a gunshot wound.
Officers found Doucette with an apparent gunshot wound and she was transported to Memorial Hospital in North Conway with serious injuries. Doucette died two days later, on Friday, as a result of those injuries. An autopsy determined Doucette’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was a homicide, the attorney general’s office said.

Doucette’s family issued a statement on Sunday saying: “We are devastated by the sudden and shocking death of our radiant daughter and sister. It is an unfathomable loss of a young woman filled with warmth and generosity. Esmae had a rousing enthusiasm for life and an infectious laugh and was a friend to all who knew her.We want to express our deepest gratitude to the first responders, police, doctors, nurses, staff at Memorial Hospital and New England.

We are grateful to our Jackson community and the greater Mount Washington Valley for enveloping us in love and taking such good care of our little girl.” On Friday, the Jackson Police Department said Mitchell was arrested on preliminary charges of assault and domestic violence.
“We are not in a position to discuss their specific relationship, we are still investigating all of the circumstances leading up to this incident,” said Assistant Attorney General Scott Chase. “We can say that we believe we have identified all parties involved with respect to that incident, and we will continue to investigate those circumstances.” Police said there was no specific threat to the community on Friday. Mitchell is currently in police custody and will be arraigned on December 5 in Carroll County Superior Court.
