Eliza Fletcher, a mother of two and a primary school teacher, was abducted on September 2 by a man identified as Cleotha Abston. He was arrested by authorities on Sept. 5 and posted on $500,000 bail on charges of “especially aggravated kidnapping and evidence tampering or fabrication.” Now, he is being slapped with new charges in an incident unrelated to another woman’s wallet.
New charges were found against the 34-year-old teacher’s kidnapper on Monday, September 5, for an incident that occurred on Friday, September 1, just one day before Fletcher was kidnapped. A woman reported suspicious activity as her CashApp and Wisely Card were being used at gas stations without her knowledge or permission on Thursday. Abston was working for a cleaning service when he was caught on camera stealing the wallet, which the cinema employee had forgotten. The manager identified the person who took the wallet as Abston, Fox 13 reported.

The arrest affidavit shows Abston using the card at gas stations where the woman told police her cards were being used. Investigators were able to retrieve footage of Abston using the card at these gas stations and it was revealed that he took $910.80 from her. The affidavit further states that he now faces charges of identity theft, theft of property of $1,000 or less, and fraudulent use/unlawful possession of credit/debit cards.
These new charges come on the heels of a body being found Monday night, September 5, in the Memphis police restricted area. The body was found seven miles from where Fletcher was abducted, but police have yet to identify the body. Abston abducted her as she aggressively ran toward Fletcher and forced her into the passenger side of the vehicle. His 36-year-old brother Mario Abston was also arrested by law enforcement officers on Saturday, September 3, and charged with possession of drugs and firearms.
Prior to this, he has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for kidnapping a Memphis lawyer, Kemper Durant, at gunpoint and placing him in the trunk of his car before forcing him to withdraw money from ATMs. Fletcher’s kidnapping affidavit states: “Because the kidnapping was violent, as captured on video, the suspect waited, then ran to the victim, then forced her into the car, where she was confined and removed and remains missing.” . , it is believed and supported by the facts and physical evidence that he sustained serious injuries. Furthermore, it is likely and evident from witness statements that these injuries left evidence of blood on the car that was cleaned by the defendant.”
