A 28-year-old man, Diego James Gettler, has been charged with second-degree kidnapping after he allegedly grabbed a girl outside the Launch K-8 STEM school in Thornton just before the first bell, around 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 23, according to the Thornton Police Department.
Gettler’s parents reported his vehicle to police after recognizing him from surveillance photos. According to police, her mother had dropped the girl off at school that morning and she was sitting on the steps of the school when a man approached her and asked if she was going there, People reported.

He reportedly walked behind her up the stairs, turned around and walked towards her. “The man made her uncomfortable, so she stood up as he went downstairs. The man grabbed [her] at this point, in a manner she described as if he wrapped her hands and arms around her waist,” the affidavit says.
That’s when the girl began to scream and Gettler “put his hands over her mouth to keep her from screaming,” the affidavit said. “[The girl] told detectives that she began to grab the man and was able to remove a mask he was wearing, at which point the man appeared startled and ran away on foot,” the affidavit continues.
Police discovered surveillance video showing the suspect parking a damaged gray Saturn Aura, walking to the school and attempting to kidnap the girl. When the girl made a noise, she ran to her car, got into the passenger side of her vehicle and drove away from her.
The same day, police released surveillance footage of the suspect, who was wearing a black sweatshirt with “three blue and orange Adidas symbols on the back,” as well as black pants and black shoes. Additionally, police released images of the damaged driver’s side of the vehicle.
The affidavit said Gettler’s parents went to the Thornton police station on Sept. 26 and told detectives that her son had been the suspect. According to the affidavit, her vehicle matched the characteristics of the suspect vehicle in the case, as well as published surveillance photos.
As part of the investigation, detectives discovered that Gettler’s cell phone was also in the area when he tried to kidnap the girl. He was arrested Sept. 26 outside a Home Depot in Parker and booked into the Adams County Jail. His court appearance is scheduled for October 5, according to People. The defendant has not entered a guilty plea. There was no response from his attorney.
