A 16-year-old Colfax High School student who went missing Wednesday while working on a school project was found dead just over 24 hours later, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday. Foul play is not considered a factor in Dante de la Torre’s death, the sheriff’s office said.

De la Torre was reported missing after visiting the Gold Run rest stop on Interstate 80 to collect soil samples, but did not return, the sheriff’s office said.

The teen went to the rest stop around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was believed to have packed water bottles, a hand towel, a small shovel, and snow boots. De la Torre, who is from Auburn, was a student in the International Baccalaureate program at Colfax High School, the Placer Union High School District confirmed.
Colfax High School, along with the entire Placer Union High School District, is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Dante de la Torre as reported by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office,” the school district said in a statement.” Such tragedies, especially when they involve young people, are very difficult to process.”
De la Torre was also on the school’s soccer team. Friends of his told KCRA 3 that many on campus loved him very much The school district said additional chaplains and counselors will be on campus to support students and staff. Crews searched the recreation area Wednesday night and returned Thursday with 40 search-and-rescue members, including those with police dogs.
There are still unanswered questions, including how exactly de la Torre died, why he was left out of school during school hours for the project, and why he was alone. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said his body will be taken to the coroner for examination.
