An Essex woman who claimed to have been raped numerous times by two different men has been jailed for five years after it was revealed she had lied. In January and May 2021, 35-year-old Cathy Richardson made a series of accusations against two men, leading to 60 investigations by Essex Police officers. One of the people she accused was detained and subjected to a forensic examination as part of these investigations.
However, when police investigated Richardson’s allegations, they found that evidence from CCTV, phone records and ANPR cameras indicated that the accused attacker was not there when the alleged attacks occurred. What’s more, one of the men agreed to have a GPS tracking tag attached to her ankle that would alert police if it was damaged or removed. When the tag data was analyzed, it was found that he had not been present when Richardson claimed the attack had occurred.

Richardson was arrested on May 28 last year and later charged with tampering with evidence. He pleaded guilty to 10 counts in May at Salisbury Crown Court and was sentenced to five years and one month in prison on Friday 30 September. Det Insp.
James Holmes, who oversaw the investigation, told the Daily Mail: “Whenever we get an allegation of rape or sexual assault, our starting point is to believe the person making that claim. They are horrific offenses and have a massive impact on those who have experienced them, and we have dedicated officers and staff supporting and investigating them.”
“For starters, Cathy Richardson’s claims were no different and we conducted our investigations with compassion and empathy. However, it quickly became clear that the accusations Richardson had made were not what they seemed. Her claims do a great disservice to victims of rape and sexual assault who need our help and support.
They have had a huge impact on the lives of the two men she accused,” Holmes added. He went on to say, “His allegations of her led to a significant amount of investigation which, for our officers, consumed a great deal of time and resources that we would have preferred to be directed towards helping genuine victims who really need us.
I sincerely hope that this case does not discourage rape and sexual assault victims, who really need our help, from reporting crimes to us. I want to assure them that they will be believed, we will support them and we will investigate what happened.”
