Incident Detail

As the prosecutor made the shocking revelations, John sat next to her lawyer and an interpreter appointed by the court. It is also revealed that John supposedly contorted Trespalacios’s body to fit in the suitcase. Supposedly, her head was left out of the luggage bag and covered with a towel. John was caught on camera on Sunday, January 22, as he placed the suitcase in the trunk of a Volkswagen Voyager in the garage of the apartment building on the north side of Bogotá and then drove away.

He sped toward the south side of Bogotá where he dumped the bag of luggage into a dumpster next to a park and then drove to the airport. The prosecutor claimed that the killer threw Trespalacios’ cell phone at El Dorado International Airport before boarding a flight to Panama City, Panama, as part of her escape.

The 35-year-old hatched a cunning plan that included booking two plane tickets, one from Panama City to São Paulo, Brazil, to disrupt the Colombian National Police’s international manhunt and the second was a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, where it would connect to a plane to Montenegro. John knew very well what he was doing since there is no extradition treaty with Colombia.

Moments before boarding the Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul, Panamanian immigration agents and Interpol arrested him on Tuesday night, January 10, at Tocumen International Airport. He told authorities that he fled Colombia because cartel members wanted to kill him and that his girlfriend was killed by the now-defunct Medellín Cartel.

John reportedly had sex with her partner Trespalacios, 23, before choking her to death. He also repeatedly hit her with clenched fists before murdering the young DJ, according to the news outlet. John even went so far as to allegedly fold the lifeless body of the woman into the suitcase.

However, his head was left out of the luggage bag. He was caught red-handed on camera on Sunday, January 22, as he placed the suitcase in the trunk of a Volkswagen Voyager in the garage of the apartment building on the north side of Bogotá before leaving.

Although no specific reason was given as to why he killed her, the duo dated for eight months and John was planning to marry Trespalacios, according to the Daily Mail. Trespalacios’ stylist, Verónica Jiménez, said John had reportedly become increasingly increasingly jealous and upset with his partner for not publicly disclosing their relationship on social media accounts.

Trespalacios had explained that her network was only to promote her DJ work. He reportedly arrived at the apartment on Thursday, January 19, and moved in with Trespalacios on Friday night. He accompanied her to a DJ gig early Saturday morning at the Nexxus bar.

John Poulos, 35, father of a boy and two girls in the United States, is accused of four counts: aggravated femicide, concealment, alteration and destruction of evidence from the crime scene. The prosecutor said that if John decides to go to trial and is found guilty of the murder of Trespalacios, he could be sentenced to 500 to 600 months in prison.

He was offered a sentence reduced to 375 months if he accepts a guilty plea. The judge would have to accept the terms of the agreement, and John couldn’t back out if he agreed. According to Jimenez, John’s eldest son, Jackson Poulos, was just four years old when doctors diagnosed him with stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma in the GI tract and abdomen, according to the Daily Mail. It’s a very rare form of cancer, with only about 350 cases per year in the United States.

The boy reportedly underwent a 13-hour operation in 2017 during which the surgeon removed more than 150 tumors that were detected in the pelvis, sigmoid colon, appendix, spleen and gallbladder. John’s eldest son was also a special guest of the former president.
