A Southern California man accused of purposefully running over three kids after they perpetrated a doorbell prank on him was found guilty of murder on Friday. Three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder were found true against Anurag Chandra in a Riverside County court.
“Our town suffered a terrible and senseless tragedy with the killing of two young guys. I appreciate the jury’s decision. County District Attorney Mike Hestrin stated in a statement that this is a significant step in the direction of justice. David Wohl, Chandra’s lawyer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

The victims, both 16 years old, were among six other teenagers in a Toyota Prius on January 19, 2020, when Chandra purposefully ran her car off the road and fled, according to the prosecution. Around 60 miles (97 kilometres) southeast of downtown Los Angeles, in Temescal Valley, the driver of the Prius lost control of the vehicle, causing the sedan to crash into a tree.

A guy was challenged by friends to play ding dong ditch or jump into the pool at night. According to The Riverside Press-Enterprise, Chandra, who did not know the teenagers, said at the trial that one of the lads rang the doorbell, showed his buttocks, and then fled. Chandra claimed he followed him out of concern for his family’s safety and a need to vent his rage.
He expressed being “extremely, extremely angry” over the practical joke. The publication added that Chandra also stated in court that he consumed 12 beers in the hours preceding the incident. Although he acknowledged during cross-examination that he had been travelling at a speed of 99 mph (159 kph) prior to the collision, he claimed he did not intend to hit the Prius and that he did not stop after rear-ending the sedan because he did not realise someone had been hurt.
According to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office, the incident claimed the lives of Jacob Ivascu, Drake Ruiz, and Daniel Hawkins, all residents of Corona.The Prius’s 18-year-old driver at the time was Sergio Campusano. The 13-year-old Joshua Ivascu, Joshua Hawkins, and he all survived the collision. They gave testimony during the trial, and they were there when the judgement was announced. When the murders happened in 2020, Chandra was already under investigation for alleged domestic abuse.
