Anndel Taylor was driving home from work Friday when she was stranded due to heavy snowfall, her family told local ABC affiliate WSOC, based in Charlotte, North Carolina. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called the storm the “blizzard of the century” and at least 27 people had died in Buffalo as of Monday afternoon, according to Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.
Taylor’s family members said she texted her group chat to say snow was piling up and she sent video of the windows of her car appearing to be covered in snow, they reported. WSOC. They added that she called 911 but emergency services were unable to reach her in time. Taylor’s mother said her daughter had planned to sleep in her car, wait out the storm and then walk home.

“I feel like everyone who tried to get to her got stuck,” Tomeshia Brown, Taylor’s sister, told the outlet. “The fire department, the police, everyone got stuck. Why didn’t they have chains on their tires? This is a state known for snow.” Taylor was found dead inside her car the next day and her family estimated that she was trapped for 18 hours.
Authorities have not given a cause of death, but her mother speculated that she died of carbon monoxide poisoning, rather than hypothermia. “The car was running and the snow kept falling, so it blocked the pipes, the exhaust pipe,” her mother told WSOC. “Then after the car shut off, that’s when it froze up.”
Shawnequa Brown, Taylor’s other sister, said there was “a lot of crying” in her family and there were still presents for her under the Christmas tree. A GoFundMe page set up by the family to pay for funeral costs had generated more than $9,600 as of this writing.
