Incident Detail

A Maricopa County detention officer has been arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison system. Sheriff Paul Penzone announced the arrest of Officer Andrés Salazar at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. Penzone says Salazar, who works at the Lower Buckeye jail, was found with nearly 100 pills that tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Salazar has been booked on one count of possession or use of narcotics, promoting smuggling in prison, and transportation for sale. Penzone says theft charges will be added as the officer allegedly forged overtime slips. Salazar has been with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office since October 2019. He has been under investigation for more than a month, Penzone said.

It was not immediately known if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. Penzone said the officer’s actions were especially “egregious” because of the risk of other officers or inmates coming into contact with the fentanyl. The sheriff also announced that his office is considering using body scanners to prevent drugs from entering the jail.

The scanners would look for foreign objects on anyone who comes in: detention officers, other staff, and inmates. They would be paid for with current budget savings. MCSO now says Salazar missed two court dates regarding the case, resulting in two warrants for his arrest. One for robbery with a $25,000 bond, the other for two counts of furthering prison smuggling, sale/transportation of dangerous drugs, and sale/transportation of narcotics with a $100,000 bond.
