According to Canadian authorities, 31-year-old Alexandra Paul was in the car with her infant when a truck struck them while five other cars were also stopped. On Tuesday, the incident took place in the Ontario township of Melancthon.Paul was declared dead, but his infant was sent to a children’s hospital nearby to get non-life-threatening medical attention.
“Skate Canada is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Alexandra Paul, a valued member of our skating community,” the skate organization wrote in a tribute to her on its Instagram page.
“Alexandra is a brilliant star on and off the rink. Her commitment, enthusiasm, and outstanding abilities have made a lasting impression on the figure skating community.Alexandra made significant contributions to the sport, and as we remember her, we also think of the “friendship and sportsmanship she exemplified.”
Paul is “not only an accomplished athlete, but a true role model for promising skaters who exhibits values like endurance, perseverance, and sportsmanship,” according to Skate Canada. The statement read, “Our thoughts are with Alexandra’s family, friends and anyone else lucky enough to know her during this difficult time.”In addition to competing at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Mitchell Islam, her husband, and Paul have won numerous international medals and three Canadian championship medals. 2016 saw her retirement.
