A Libyan man accused of making the bomb that killed 270 people after Pan Am Flight 103 blew up over Lockerbie in Scotland in 1988 is in US custody, Scottish and US police officials said on Sunday. Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi was detained about two years after former US Attorney General Bill Barr first announced that the US had filed charges against him.

A Justice Department spokesman confirmed to Reuters on Sunday that the United States has custody of the suspect. Mas’ud is expected to appear for the first time in federal court in Washington. Details about the timing of the hearing will be released shortly, the spokesperson added.

Court documents described Mas’ud as a skilled bomb maker who joined the Libyan Foreign Security Organization intelligence service in the 1970s and participated in a series of operations outside Libya, rising to the rank of colonel.

A military source in the Libyan city of Misrata said Mas’ud had been airlifted from the airport there. Reuters could not immediately establish when.

Families of those killed in the Lockerbie bombing have been told the suspect is in US custody, a spokesman for the Crown Office and Prosecutor’s Fiscal Service for Scotland (COPFS) said on Sunday.

The BBC first reported Mas’ud’s arrest. The bomb aboard the Boeing 747, flying from London to New York City, killed all 259 people on board and 11 on the ground, the deadliest militant attack in Britain.
