A rising star and captain of the Canadian junior ice hockey team, Eli Palfreyman, has died after collapsing in the locker room during a preseason game in Ontario on Tuesday night, August 30, according to reports.
The 20-year-old from Ontario unexpectedly collapsed during the first intermission of the Ayr Centennials’ preseason game against the Boston Jr Bruins at the North Dumfries Community Complex, according to the Toronto Sun.

Team doctors tried to revive the rising star, but were tragically unable to save him. The cause of death has not yet been revealed by authorities. El Centenario said that the organization will not speculate on the reason “out of respect for the family’s right to privacy.”
“We ask for your prayers and support for Eli’s family and each of our players,” Centennials vice president Brian Shantz said in a statement. “Our Centennials organization and the Ayr community are in mourning. Eli had the best care from our medical staff and quick response from the outpatient staff.”
Paying tribute to the late star, the team tweeted, “RIP17” as they shared a photo of Palfreyman’s hockey jersey. Palfreyman was made captain of the Ayr Centennials just five days before his death. He was to be the late player’s second with the organization. He was selected in the 12th round of the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League Draft in 2018. Prior to joining the Centennials, Eli had played for the Atlanta Mad Hatters in the United States Premier Hockey League. In addition to ice hockey, Eli was also a terrific soccer player and baseball fan.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Eli’s family and all of his teammates and staff with Ayr,” Peterborough Petes general manager Michael Oke said in a statement as he mourned Eli’s death. Following the passing of the team captain, GOJHL has decided to postpone the match originally scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
Tributes have been pouring in for the player ever since the news of his death. “He was out of sight, but never out of our hearts,” said the Atlanta Madhatters, Palfreyman’s former team. “With tears and deep sadness, we offer our deepest condolences to his family and those blessed to be his teammates.”
Another hockey team called the Guelph Storm tweeted: “The Storm are devastated to learn of the passing of Ayr Centennials captain Eli Palfreyman. Our deepest condolences go out to family, friends, teammates, Centennials and the entire community.” Eli’s hockey community. Eli was a leader and friend to all. He will be sorely missed.”
