Incident Detail
This is believed to be the first time King Charles and Camilla have returned to their respective homes since they headed to the royal residence at Balmoral after receiving a call about the queen’s deteriorating health. After seeing his wife off at his residence, King Charles proceeded to his home, Highgrove House, near Tetbury in Gloucestershire. King chose to drive himself to his home, as his residence is only a 30-minute drive from Camilla’s estate in Wiltshire. He was escorted by the Metropolitan Police Special Escort Group.
King Charles has owned Highgrove House from him for a long time. He bought it in 1980 from Maurice Macmillan, a Conservative MP and son of former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. The King has been granted a day of privacy and reflection after the long and eventful week in which he saw the death of his beloved mother and ascended the throne as the new monarch, according to the Daily Mail report.
King Charles is not expected to attend any public events on Thursday September 15, but he is expected to continue preparing himself to be King and will receive red boxes of state documents. Sent by his private secretary, the red box includes a daily summary of events in Parliament, letters and other state documents. All papers inside the box must be read, approved and signed by the monarch. It is not yet clear if Charles has received a new set of red boxes or if he is going to use his mother’s red box for the time being.
The day off from public duties came after King Charles was joined by his three brothers and sons, William and Harry, as they walked in procession behind the late Queen’s coffin which was headed to the Palace of Westminster today. After the procession, the King was seen standing next to his wife, still in his livery, as their bags were unloaded from the plane before being placed in cars this afternoon.
