Death of Kassandra Sweeney

A teenager who was arrested and charged by Northfield police on August 11 is suspected of carrying out the murders of Kassandra Sweeney and her two children on August 3.

The boy will likely be tried as a juvenile and is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of fabrication of physical evidence.

According to the announcement Thursday by Attorney General John M. Formella, State Police Col. Nathan Noyes and Northfield Police Chief John Raffaelly, Kassandra Sweeney, 25, and her two sons, Benjamin and Mason, of 4 and 1 years old, they had been killed in a triple homicide.

Responding to a 911 call for assistance, authorities arrived shortly after 11:30 a.m. last Wednesday and found all three victims dead inside their home.

The juvenile guidelines, which protect the identity of minors and prohibit the disclosure of any additional information in circumstances affecting them, were given as the justification for why no further information about the teen was made public.

It’s unclear if the Sweeney family knew the boy or had any other information that might have given them the ability to identify him, such as his age.
