The Virginia native reportedly met singer/guitarist Tom Johnston in 1970 after arriving in San Jose, California. “Hartman and Johnston started playing local bars in the Bay Area. They soon met singer/guitarist Pat Simmons, whose finger-playing style richly complemented Johnston’s R&B strumming style, and the groundwork was laid for The Doobie Brothers.
“While her debut album in 1971 failed to make the charts, just a year later her second record, Toulouse Street, became a huge sensation. Producer Ted Templeman helped the band create a sound that was organic, yet radio-friendly, and brought in Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne to add unique musical textures,” he adds.
Although after 1979, Hartman stopped working with the group, years later, he rejoined “for their 1989 reunion album ‘Cycles’. He then went back to playing with the Doobie Brothers until he retired in 1992,” reported PEOPLE. Hartman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of the Doobie Brothers.
