Incident Detail

However, Fidele did not realize that he had left the child in the back seat of the van until around 1:15 p.m. m., when he went to get a package. When he saw the boy, he was apparently unconscious with his eyes open. After the father’s 911 call, officers began life-saving procedures and assisted him in transporting the child to a nearby hospital. However, the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police later confirmed the presence of a reminder security alarm in the back seat of the van, according to a search warrant. According to authorities, Fidele showed “no urgency” in removing his son from the truck, as shown in Ring camera footage from a nearby neighbor’s home.

Fidele was arrested and charged with leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle and causing grievous bodily injury. “This is a very unfortunate and tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim during this difficult time,” the Port St Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) said in a press release. “This can happen to anyone,” said Janette Fennell, president of Kids and Car Safety.

She added: “And the biggest mistake you can think of is that it can’t happen to you. If you put something in the back seat like your wallet, cell phone or computer when you leave in the morning with your child and when you arrive at the destination it will make you open the back door. That’s looking before you close it.” According to the nonprofit organization, there have been more than 1,000 child deaths in hot cars across the country since 1990.
