The baseball fan accused of snatching a riot shield from police and aiding the mob of outraged Donald Trump supporters overwhelm law enforcement at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 has a reputation for painting his face red to whip up the crowd at St. Louis Cardinals games.In relation to the attack on January 6, Daniel Donnelly Jr., 43, of St. Louis, Missouri, is accused of a felony and at least four misdemeanors.
Because of his zeal for the Cardinals, the baseball team from his hometown, Donnelly is also known as “Rally Runner” and has gained some local notoriety for his energetic dashes around the stadium during home games. Prosecutors claim that Donnelly was among those there when a confrontation broke out between a large group of protesters and a sizable number of police officers attempting to secure the building at the Lower West Terrace tunnel entrance.

Prosecutors claim that at about 4:10 p.m., he “obtained a riot shield” from other rioters in the crowd and continued to go toward the tunnel. Prosecutors claim that he ultimately made his way to the front of the mob where he “may be seen holding the shield up to law enforcement officials, forming a wall with other shields held by other rioters.
Later, other rioters used Donnelly as a shield and rushed passed him to attack police officers, according to the government. Donnelly persisted in maintaining his position a few inches from the conflict. The FBI claims that Donnelly was also witnessed assisting the throng in climbing a ladder into the tunnel.
Like so many of the other Jan. 6 defendants, Donnelly’s own social media posts provided the evidence required by the prosecution to file charges.He stated in the video, which he posted on Jan. 6 after eventually departing the Capitol, “I get a riot shield, and I’m not trying to cause any violence, but I’m trying to be the furthest person to get through all the way, or at least get the furthest.”
“For some reason, like, the other individuals up there on the front lines with me, they did something similar… I took up a lot of space, I had the riot shield, and I was right up there… The crowd as a whole was doing that, and they were able to go farther than we had gotten the entire time, so it was kind of like they followed my lead.
According to Donnelly, he “got through those doors into the Capitol,” but was prevented from going any farther by police “reinforcements.”Donnelly was recognized by the prosecution thanks to his uncommon clothing choices. The charges were announced Wednesday in a news release from the Justice Department. ”

While the two of them allegedly examined the Jan. 6 film, Joseph McBride reportedly said of Donnelly, “He’s clearly a law enforcement officer,” according to the Huffington Post. In a court document submitted in December 2021 on behalf of the alleged instigator of the Jan. 6 riots, Ryan Nichols, McBride claimed that although Donnelly may have the appearance of a Trump supporter, “[c]loser review, however, suggests that he is likely an undercover agent” because he was observed “passing weapons through the crowd” and “communicating with other suspicious persons through use of military hand signals.”
