The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has killed the suspect in a gruesome triple homicide in Riverside after he opened fire on a SWAT team Friday. According to authorities, on Friday, November 25, officers saw 28-year-old Austin Edwards driving a red Kia Soul southbound on Highway 247. Planes tracked Edwards until SWAT units could locate him.
The planes followed Edwards onto Highway 62 and finally onto Kelso Cima Road before deputies could take up positions. As the team intercepted the vehicle, Edwards continued to drive away, shooting at officers as he tried to escape. He lost control of the car when he went off the road. Shortly after the accident, Edwards got out of the car and pointed his gun at the sheriff’s helicopter.

The officers shot Edwards and pronounced him dead at the scene. Edwards was charged with the murder of Mary Winek, 69, Sharie Winek, 65, and Brooke Winek, 38. He was also accused of taking a teenage girl after murdering the three people. Riverside police said Monday morning that this was not an official kidnapping case.
The girl was not injured during the chase. She is currently in protective custody. Police said they did not believe she was involved in the killings or setting the fire. According to the Riverside Police Department, Edwards was involved in a “catfishing” scheme, where he developed a relationship with the teenager.
Officers believed he obtained the teen’s personal information and traveled from Virginia to Riverside.Edwards was a Virginia state trooper until he recently resigned. “This is yet another horrific reminder of the predators that exist online and that are preying on our children,” Gonzalez said.
“If you’ve already had a conversation with your kids about being safe online and on social media, have it again. If not, start now to better protect them.” They believe he parked his car in a neighbor’s driveway and entered the teen’s home before killing her grandfather, grandmother and mother.
Their bodies were found at the residence when firefighters responded to the burning home Friday afternoon. Detectives said Edwards worked for the Virginia State Police for more than a year up to four days before the triple homicide.
After his time with the state police, Edwards began working with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Virginia. “Our hearts go out to the Winek family and their loved ones during this time of tremendous grief as it is a tragedy for all Riversiders,” Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez said.
