MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: A girl was rushed to hospital after being viciously attacked by two dogs outside a school on Wednesday morning, July 27, in southeast Melbourne.

The 12-year-old boy was mutilated on the street adjacent to Berwick Fields Primary School during the school’s busy handover period. The two dogs, which had escaped from a neighboring property, attacked his upper and lower torso.

According to The Herald Sun, several parents and children saw the terrifying attack, after which locals, including an off-duty paramedic, rushed to their aid. The girl was then taken to Casey Hospital, where she underwent surgery. Her condition is said to be stable.

“We were called in about an animal incident in Berwick on Wednesday,” a Victoria Ambulance spokeswoman said. “A girl was taken to Casey Hospital in stable condition with minor upper and lower body injuries.”

The girl’s 9-year-old dog was with her at the time of the incident and was also maimed in the attack. The dog also underwent surgery.

‘I owe you a beer’

Mick Garratt, the girl’s father, took to social media to thank all the locals who helped his daughter and her dog. He wrote: “I owe you a beer.”

“Thank you to everyone who stopped by to help today. […] the dogs have been captured and the owner has been identified,” he added. “We will leave it in the hands of the law.”

In a similarly horrific incident in July, a four-year-old girl was killed in a dog attack in Dallas, Texas, when no adults were inside the home. Lea Freeman was fatally attacked by the dog on Saturday, July 9.

His mother, Tiara Freeman, along with Lea and two of her other children, had moved into a house near Bonnie View Road. On the day of her attack, she had gone to a store while asking the woman who lived with her to look after the children. The girl was rushed to the hospital, but she did not survive.

In another incident, a 7-year-old Texas boy was mauled by a boxer brindle mix and a bull mastiff while getting off a bus. Connor Landers was seen by one of his neighbors when his own dog started growling during the accident. The boy suffered bruises, cuts, bites and deep scratches. Connor ultimately had to undergo three-hour reconstructive surgery.
